Kaffir means pagan or infidel.
That would be an Arabic meaning of the term. Since the Afrikaneers were not
of an Arabic linguistic background, but a Dutch one, that meaning is
unlikely. I suspect that Kaffir is derived from kever, the word for beetle.
In German, the word for beetle is kafer.
