Danger of War

"There is no such thing as an inevitable war. If war comes it will be
from failure of human wisdom." Bonar Law: Whenever there is a failure
of American policy it inevitably leads to war.
Recent examples in Iraq and Afghanistan proved the fact that the Gung-
Ho policies of the American administration have not learnt anything
from the disastrous war in Vietnam where hundreds of thousands of
innocent people were killed.

The massive military rehearsal carried out by American puppet Israel
has sent alarming signals around the world. Once again the American
Government has probably decided to use force as an instrument of
diplomacy without bothering for the consequences of such a decision.
It is in the knowledge of everyone that the State of Israel cannot
take on Iran on its own and that it would require massive military and
financial support from the United States if it is to make any
impression on Iran.

The pretext chosen is once again Iran's nuclear programme that is
ostensibly to generate electric power to spur economic development in
that country. The Americans along with its European allies have been
clamoring to deny nuclear technology to Iran so that it remains
dependent on these powers for its developmental efforts and progress.
On it's part the Iranian government has with some justification
refused to stop enrichment of uranium a key technology that can be
used both for generating energy and also to produce atomic weapons.

This does not mean that the American Government through Israel should
try to first dictate to Iran and after its failure unleash the hounds
of war to enforce their will on the State of Iran. In case Israel
carries out its threat and uses military force against vital
installations in Iran the Western World should remember that the price
of oil which has already sent food prices soaring could spiral to
300-350 dollars per barrel from the current 140$.

This will in turn have a devastating worldwide consequence with the
danger that a vast majority of economies could collapse. It must also
be remembered that there are uncertain conditions in Nigeria and some
countries that produce oil in South America, which could have a
snowball effect on the price of oil, which is not in the interest of
anyone.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency has
already warned that if Iran were to be attacked the whole region will
be turned into a, "ball of fire". The comments were made after
officials of the American government confirmed that the Israeli
military exercise seemed to be in practice run for a potential strike
against Iran's nuclear facilities. This exercise was conducted in
collaboration with Greek air forces' central command. Reports have
suggested that in case Iran was attacked it will accelerate its
nuclear programme and that could lead to the manufacture of atomic
weapons much more quickly than anticipated at the present point in
time.

The fallout from any war imposed on Iran would also have serious
consequences for Pakistan that was already under pressure by the
Americans in its war against terror policy. It could be therefore
extremely important for Pakistan to make it clear to the Americans and
the Government of Israel that any adventure against Iran will not be
acceptable and that peaceful methods must be explored further to try
to find a solution for the Iranian nuclear programme.

Pakistan must also make it clear that it will not support or allow the
American Government to use facilities that have been loaned to the
Americans for their operations in Afghanistan and that this country
may consider to revise its policy of supporting the Americans in
Afghanistan policy in case the State of Iran came under military
attack.

It would be also in the fitness of things if the Government of
Pakistan took an initiative and called for an OIC meeting on the issue
in an effort to evolve joint strategy that may avert war in an already
volatile region. Pakistan must remember that after Iran, hostile
forces maybe encouraged to create a situation and then justify an
attack on this country as well.

The threat of war in Iran has come at a time when Pakistan was already
in serious problems and there was a danger that institution of
democracy could be damaged once again due to the political wrangling
and the obstinacy of General Parvez Musharraf who has so far refused
to step down. A war that is imposed on Iran will increase the
difficulties of the Pakistani government in some areas of Balochistan
and NWFP, which are already in the grip of religious extremism.

A situation that will also not be in the interest of the Americans but
events strongly suggest that the US government will not listen to
reason and will support an Israeli attack on Iran. In case the
Iranians were able to mount a massive counter attack that was being
propagated by their leadership then the damage on both sides could be
colossal where hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians are
killed.

The entire region could be quickly sucked in the conflict and could
also ignite a war of attrition dramatically increasing incidences of
terrorism across the world. This cycle of violence must be avoided at
all costs and those who were trying to impose military solutions for
diplomatic issues must think twice before they take the plunge.

In case the Muslim world is united on this issue it may well avert a
disastrous situation in the Middle East. Most of the countries in the
Middle East should also realize that a war between Israel and Iran
will destabilize their countries and most of the monarchies in the
region maybe pushed either towards dictatorships or be forced to
create opportunities for a democratic order.

Therefore it is also in their interest that they use whatever
influence they have and try to convince the Americans that a war in
this point in time will only lead to death and destruction and nothing
positive will come out of this adventure. zarnatta@xxxxxxxxxxxx
