Thomas Vaughan tells us that other people's kids are not his
responsibility. His way of saying that he and his family are alone in
this world that they live alone and make their way alone and do not
benefit from the cooperative efforts that created the roads, the
electrical grids and the other infrastructure that he and those he
loves use everyday. I will not dwell on the selfishness that mister
Vaughan's six simple words imply about him. I will just say that
children, anyone's children are our collective responsibility because
they eventually become adults and how they are treated as children
dictates what kind of adults they will become. As to the idea that
people should not have children they cannot afford that would mean only
the rich would have children and since the rich have fewer children
then any other demographic. If we follow Mister Vaughan's
prescription in a hundred years there will not be enough people in this
country to defend it and we, as a nation will simply disappear. It
said that Rome fell from within that it was gone long before the
Visigoths and the Vandals sacked it. I think it began to fall on the
day a rich Roman citizen said that his fellow Romans were not his
responsibility and he would look to his own and others must do the
same. On that day Rome ceased to be.
Mister Vaughan and all those like him believe that there is no such
thing as the public good. They use everything that a nation of people
working together built but do not credit it as any more then their do
and give no thought to those who struggled to create what their callus
disregard will eventually destroy.
A people form a nation not the wealth of a few or the dreams of a few.
When those who have benefited the most from the generosity of a country
turn their backs on that nation and scorn it, claiming that they are
self-made and self-supporting then will it fail. Mister Vaughan is of
course a fool. He cannot see that he is not alone, that he has been
borne on the backs and the history of all those who came before and he
owes to them a debt paid into the future so that the children of those
children he claims no responsibility for can do the same.
