Iraq is folly

I was listening to a gentleman on the Ed Schultz show talk about his
experience in Iraq. He had some points that were interesting. He
disagreed with Bush of course and who but the rabid right doesn't
these days but what he didn't see and what the captain newly returned
from Iraq that was on later missed was the seminal fact that the
insurgency in Iraq is fighting for their country. They are trying to
force what they see as an invader from their soil and would not we do
the same.

There are now two sides of the debate about Iraq both equally wrong.
One side says we should stay until what we broke is fixed of course no
one mentions that Iraq was broke the moment it was jiggered into
existence after world war one because the British and their allies
simply dumped a bunch of people into a newly drawn country that
despised, hated and mistrusted one another. Then there are those that
say we should just leave or as Bush likes to put it, cut and run
instead of what he is doing which is cut and walk slowly so as not to
let the enemy think you are really running from a fight you cannot win
short of the total annihilation of the Iraqis themselves. Then there is
Bush's rational for all the death and chaos, we stay until we
complete a mission that has never truly been defined, because to do
otherwise is to dishonor the sacrifice of those men and women who have
died in this unnecessary, illegal and for profit war. Of course
wouldn't it be a greater honor to those who serve, some of which are
about to die, if they didn't have to be sacrificed on an alter of
Corporate greed and corruption?

But here is the real truth backed up by the history of the human race.
Conquers eventually fall prey to the conquered. Nationalism triumphs
over a desire to both control a landed population and to force an
unwillingly populace to adopt your Governmental and societal norms. The
British failed at it. The Russians could not do it in Afghanistan and
the Assyrians who were the first western civilization to try, failed so
badly at it that any record of them and their attempt at subjugating
the world was almost wiped from the face of the earth by those they
attempted to rule.

So no matter what we do in Iraq, not matter how much progress we
convince ourselves that we have achieved in the end, the moment we
leave it will all change. Iraq will become what the Iraqis want it to
be and not what we decide or wish it to be. It is my hope that
something good comes of this humongous foreign policy blunder that Bush
and his gang of four have so poorly executed, but I have my doubts that
anything good can come of something done so badly.

To all the men and women in uniform in Iraq and elsewhere in the world,
thank you for all you have done for this country.
