Re: Should Federal Funds be wasted rebuilding Florida every year?

There seems to be an argument about this every hurricane season. While
beach houses and vacation homes in disaster prone areas aren't a good idea,
folks seem to forget that when they come to beaches and the like they enjoy
having gas stations, fast food places, hotels and motels, grocery stores
and the like right close at hand, not several hundred miles away where
safety is better. It slays me to hear some family complaining about
rebuilding such-and-such a motel right on the beach (where hurricanes come)
as they check in for their vacation. Later on they may go to a nearby
restaurant which was (you guessed it) rebuilt too, often with the help of
federal funds. The people who work at these places get their houses
rebuilt too, often with federal money. They have to live someplace, and
they don't get to go live somewhere else when tourist season is over or
when bad weather threatens. Granted, some of the funds are wasted, but
then again some of the funds are sort of a tax. While some of the cases
are pretty clear cut, it would take a wise person indeed to discriminate
between what is necessary and what is frivolous.
