most circumstances. I don't want to discuss specific tactics or reasons why
in these newsgroups, but for many reasons Iran's large number of
surface-to-ship missiles are almost completely useless too them in this
situation. If a US ship gets hit by one, it will be because the captain
and/or crew made an increadibly stupid mistake. Iran certainly won't be
sending any airplanes anywhere, after the first hour or two of a US attack

Of course what he says is correct. How many U.S. ship were hit by Iraq,
either by missle or plane, in either war? If you are having trouble
counting, it is because there are none. There are no effective Iranian
weapons against US warplanes or warships.
In fact, in general other than by hiding explosives and detonating them
remotely, or suicide bombers sneaking up on innocent civilians and
detonating themselves, Arab Muslims and Iranians for the most part have
no way to hurt Westerners.
The Russians have been assisting them with their ballistic missile
program. They have bought fully functional missiles from North Korea and
other countries, and yes, they are capable of hitting Israel.
Assuming they can get them off and past multiple levels of AMM systems.
That is doubtful to say the least.
They are certainly capable of *targeting* US ships. If they can
actually do damage, we will have to wait and see.
A boy with a slingshot can target them too. If they do damage, it
will, as the OR said, be a tactical failure of a U.S. command.
