Usually spelled "Birobidzhan" -- a remote corner of Siberia
established by Stalin in in 1928 as a territorial homeland for Jews in
the Soviet Union, to help develop the Soviet Far East, and (cynically)
to get some of the Jews out of Moscow and Leningrad. It never really
amounted to much (partly due to Stalin's vacillating policies toward
Jewish culture), and rather few Jews live there now.
