In my folks' case, when they lost their freedom of movement, they both went
quickly. The same thing happened two decades earlier with our dog. I knew
one man who held on seven years until the day his youngest was sure to
graduate high school. There is a shutting-down process, but how much is under
voluntary control? Some people last well beyond any expectations.
