I have a health savings account and a high deductable for my medical
insurance. I'm concerned about the itemized bill that I just received
for an ACL reconstructive surgery. Of all the charges, I was appalled
that the hospital charged about $650 for a post-surgery "Polar Care"
ice-pump. These are sold elsewhere from $150-$260. $260 was the
highest
price I could find anywhere. The problem is that I was still drugged
from the anaesthesia and this device was placed in my car by a nurse.
They also, with a very caring attitude, said, "Here take this cold
gel-pack for your ride home". The pack was billed at $156. The
typical
retail price is $22.95.

Is there any way to contest gross overcharging for items like these?

Contest it. If you do not get satisfaction, you may well be
able to get the local paper, or a local television station,
to take it up for you.

Go on... row your boat straight up Niagra Falls. Lol. You can contest
that
about as much as you can contest Congress paying too much for toilets.
Hospitals are forced into unfortunate situations b/c the gov't won't
pay
them what they deserve via medicare.

Why is it that medical people have this terrible sense of what they
DESERVE from the rest of us?

You think I'd get any difference of pay if the hospitals got more or less?

What that sense of entitlement still controls all your posts.

Nope. Follow along - this is about the capitalistic notion of bulk
purchasing. Insurance companies can do it, individuals can't. Although
in
an at least and outpatient setting, bills to individuals are often
lessened
because of this fact.

Bulk purchasing does not function in a labor-intensive industry. It is
just an excuse to hose the uninsured.
