I have a health savings account and a high deductable for my medical
insurance. I'm concerned about the itemized bill that I just received
for an ACL reconstructive surgery. Of all the charges, I was appalled
that the hospital charged about $650 for a post-surgery "Polar Care"
ice-pump. These are sold elsewhere from $150-$260. $260 was the highest
price I could find anywhere. The problem is that I was still drugged
from the anaesthesia and this device was placed in my car by a nurse.
They also, with a very caring attitude, said, "Here take this cold
gel-pack for your ride home". The pack was billed at $156. The typical
retail price is $22.95.
Is there any way to contest gross overcharging for items like these?
Contest it. If you do not get satisfaction, you may well be
able to get the local paper, or a local television station,
to take it up for you.
