For some atkins works, for others it doesn't. For many most diets work for
a period of time, but ultimately fail. Only about 5-15% of diets have long
term success despite many of them having short term success. But that is
not the main point here. It is a doctor's responsibility to inform his
patients when they are doing things to harm themselves. Overeating
resulting in obesity is one of those things. If your wife is anything like
you, she avoids doctors regardless of what they say about her obesity.

If you doubt that morbid obesity is a major health problem in this and other
countries then I suggest you read up a bit. People with grossly elevated
BMI's not only live shorter lives but cost the US tax payer a significant
chunk of change. Weren't you the one complaining about how life expectancy
here is shorter while healthcare costs are more? It's a societal problem it
seems - one that you obviously think is just fine to have.
