Re: Libertarian views on dog breeding




Thanks for your input.
I absolutely agree that any breeder or owner should treat their animals
well and wish the best for them. I do think dogs should be treated as
sentient creatures. The problem as I see it is that when a puppy
changes hands for any amount of money, it is a sale, so, how are you
going to control something you sold and has now another owner? Would
that not infringe on the new owners' rights? Even if the new owner
agreed to certain conditions at the time of sale, is he/she not
entitled to change his opinion later on (maybe years later)?
Mistreating or neglecting the dog would be completely valid reasons,
but what if -for example- the new owner decides to re-sell the dog or
breed it against the breeders' desire/contract - that could not be
under any circumstances be considered "animal abuse".

I may be wrong on this, as I am not well versed in philosophy or
libertarianism, which is something I have only recently got interested
in, but I am under the impression that libertarianism is a
philosophical movement or an ethical stance in life more than
specifically a political theory?
