"The" seems to be in all the dictionaries. "Thre" seems to be a listing
in none of them.

Any unabridged dictionary should include some kind of etymology.

Actually, although my CD-ROM OED is unavailable, my hardcopy of The
Oxford English Dictionary of English Etymology edited by C.T. Obions et al
is still available. So let's see if "thre" is or is not a word!

Oh yes, here it is on page 919. From the Old Friesian, "Thre". So I win
and you lose that one.
