http://www.atf.gov/about/mission/

"We are ATF.

"A unique law enforcement agency in the United States Department
of Justice that protects our communities from violent criminals,
criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of
firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of
arson
and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of
alcohol and tobacco products. We partner with communities,
industries, law enforcement, and public safety agencies to
safeguard the public we serve through information sharing,
training, research, and use of technology."

=================================================

The ATF has morphed from glorified tax collectors to something
new. Half the stuff in their mission statement seems like it
should be handled by the FBI.

Anyone know where the line between these two agencies actually
is?

The abortion clinic bombings years ago, Eric Rudolph, the FBI
sought help from the ATF for analysis, tipped me off to a change
in
the BATFE's purpose. The BATFE seems to be the source for fire
root
cause, and when the 'E' was added, they became the source for
explosives.

Initally they were changed to "BATFAE" (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Fierarms, Arson and Explosives), but somewhere along the way the "A"
has been omitted.

That's why you will occassionally see me referring to them as
"BATFAE".

I'm pretty sure that last "A" was for "And" (Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). It was dropped in favor of the
BATF&E designation which isn't the way they refer to themselves.

All-in-all they are still just the plain old ATF, even their website
is (www.atf.gov).

If I'm not mistaken, it was BATF then BATFE.

Right now they refer to themselves as the ATF (Bureau of Alcohl,
Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives)

They went from being tax collectors to "being at the front line of
violent crime."

They need to be closed down.

No, they need to be there for the expertise that they can bring, but
the
enforcement part of it should move to the FBI as should the enforcement
portion of the IRS. At least ATF finally moved to the DOJ instead of
remaining in the Treasury. We need less alphabet suit types running
aroung carrying guns while many try to prevent us from doing likewise.

The FBI also has its own Investigative Labs and Science & Technology
Center. The current agents in both the ATF & DEA could be merged into
that creating a super-sized function, while at the same time we could
move their co-mingle their Street Agents as well. Perhaps into
something like a National Police Force who's focus is on those who
break Federal Laws, and providing Technical & Scientific Expertise to
State & Local Law Enforcement agencies.

I sort of like the way the Italians have their Law Enforcement set-up.
Seems to make a little more sense to me then our current method.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enforcement_in_Italy#Structure

That could work. Point is that there are a lot of federal agencies
carrying guns that have little or no need to do so. If they wish to
restrict my carrying of one, they can start with themselves.

Those with the biggest mouths about taking guns away, must also have the
smallest balls since they always have to have someone else do it for
them.
