The NRA was founded after the Civil War to promote marksmanship
training, not to defend gun owners against unconstitutional interference
from the government. The NRA is still a primary sanctioning body for
firearms competition in the US.

The NRA actually used to cooperate with the government in writing
"sensible" gun control laws until the membership saw what that
cooperation was costing them.

The NRA was essentially forced into politics and court challenges, not
establishing the NRA-ILA until 1975.
