Bill C-391, a private members bill intended to repeal the long-gun
registry, passed second reading in the House of Commons yesterday.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller, one of the seconders of the
bill, called the 164- 137 vote in its favour "a pleasant surprise."
"There was a lot more on our side than I thought there would be," he
said in an interview from Ottawa. "There was some individuals on the
other side who weren't on our side late last week. Obviously, I think,
their constituents have got to them.
"There's some of them over there that I know are tight in their
ridings and I think that they realized that hey, we better start
voting for what our constituents want instead of what the party wants.
"It was a pleasant surprise but it's the way democracy is supposed to
work."
Miller, long an opponent of the registry, said "it never did anything
it was supposed to except cost money."
None of this appears to be of much good for all those long guns already registered, though. Perhaps some extensive trading activity should now occur?
