The Associated Press
Published: January 15, 2009
TOKYO: The number of murder cases jumped more than 8 percent in Japan
last year, despite an overall drop in the crime rate in the country,
which has long boasted of low crime, the National Police Agency said
Thursday.
The agency said that 1.8 million crimes took place last year — down
4.7 percent from a year earlier — with burglaries making up the
largest proportion, accounting for 76 percent of total crimes. It
marked the sixth year in which crime has fallen in Japan.
The number of serious violent offenses, which includes murder, rape
and arson, declined 5.1 percent to 8,588. But murder cases alone rose
8.4 percent to 1,300 from last year — though they still accounted for
less than 1 percent of all crime.
Gun deaths are rare in Japan due to the nation's strict gun control.
The agency did not have annual data, but shooting deaths accounted for
only 1.2 percent of the total killings in the six months to September
2008. Most cases of gun violence are gang-related.
in Japan is rare BECAUSE of gun control.
At least you understand the difference between what I say and what I
quote someone else saying. Could you pass on your wisdom to some of
your mentaly challenged compatriots?
Normally I read the entire post before responding.
For Phil it's all about murder using a gun. The article he cited states
that murder cases rose 8.4 percent. To him, it seemingly doesn't matter
how people are killed, as long as it's not with a gun.
Bullshit. I've posted copious amounts of data in this ng regarding
murder by means other than guns. This IS a gun group so why so
surprised when gyuns are mentioned?
Not bullshit. From your posting history, you key in on the mention of fewer gun deaths as if it's your life's blood while ignoring any rise murders overall.
Was I surprised guns were mentioned or is that your strawman?
Look at which sentence Phil chose as the title for his post: "Gun deaths
are rare in Japan due to the nation's strict gun control."
Then look at the very first sentence of the body of the article: "The
number of murder cases jumped more than 8 percent in Japan last year..."
It's the gun quote that makes it relevant. This isn't
talk.politics.murder.
Nope, but, if murder via firearm goes down while murder via other means goes up, maybe it shows the gun laws to be irrelevant to overall murder. That much like suicide, murder is means independent--or maybe not. Such discussion would be relevant to this group though.
Those people are no less dead because they were killed with a different
implement, but that's not part of Phil's agenda--it's only about the guns.
As is this group in case you hadn't noticed.
This group isn't only about guns. It's about talking about the politics where guns are concerned.
If policy is debated, a law passed, or a bill raised, that's political. If any of those concern guns, it's what this group is about.
So, no, I hadn't noticed that this group is only about the guns.
In another post Phil said that demographics were irrelevant. But, the
article he cites states "Most cases of gun violence are gang-related"
which to me screams "demographics".
The whole article screams it's the demographics because Japan "has long
boasted of low crime".
Doesn't matter to Phil, because it's only about "Gun deaths" which are
rare in Japan "due to the nation's strict gun control."- Hide quoted text -

I did NOT say demograhics per se were irrelevant, and you know that.
Not in those particular words, no. But by implication, in that post, you were saying demographics were irrelevant to the gun/crime discussion.
Why would you try a slimy stunt like that, I thought you knew better.
Because I assumed you would be consistent and your attitude would carry over into other posts.
