That's stupid; conscription is not an aspect of a socialist economy.

It is, however, an aspect of authoritarian or totalitarian societies.

Depends on how you define socialism. The definition I like best is
that socialism is where the state is more important than the rights of
the individual. As opposed to capitalism which puts the rights of
individuals above the state. Using that definition, conscription is an
aspect of socialism.

You know that is a tricky question. If the job of government is to create an
environment where free markets, free enterprise (not capitalism, an invention
of the great Satan, unemployed and unemployable Marx) can flourish there are
cases where in order to create the environment and to protect the nation a
government may need to take action against external threats that will hurt
everyone.

Unable to conscript, unable to raise a military, a government may find itself
unable to provide that protection of society that it is it's charge to do.. And
who does that benefot, except the aggressor?

I agree. Countries need national defense. National defense is pure
socialism (I keep thinking of soldier ants). But it's a necessary
evil. That doesn't mean you thow the baby out with the bath water and
go all out Karl Marx. Just keep in mind that things like national
defense are in fact socialism and need to be kept to a minimum.
