Be realistic. Start them with a 9mm. If the gun is large enough, it
won't recoil much. She can graduate to more concealable sizes later.

I carry a full sized pistol. It's comfortable.

If recoil is that big of an issue, look into compensated glocks.
Even a .40 is no big deal with those.
