You probably heard about the Northridge bank robbery in LA in 1997. http://www.emergency.com/lapdbank.htm If I recall correctly, the LEOs had to go to a local gun shop for more firepower.
That "more firepower" was for deer rifles so the cops could shoot through the body armor - not for fully auto weapons.
That's more than 10 years ago, and the LA bad guys have gotten better armed since then. Maybe full auto is for exceptional occasions, but the LEOs do get outgunned on occasion.
Like when? A scumbag pulls out a so-called assault weapon from his britches and shoots a cop? About the only place where one can carry such a weapon is in the car - and that's what happened in FL, a few months ago when such a scumbag shot a cop dead.
And BTW, the scumbag's "assault rifle" won't shoot through the cop's body armor.
