Re: A well regulated militia or any individual

It could easily be construed to mean licensing of owners and secure
storage of weapons though.

I don't know of any logical reason for licensing but if one existed then it
would stand to reason that the state would pick up the tab for it. Forcing
the "militia" to pay licensing fees would be counter-productive to ensuring
a well-regulated militia. Come on, you know that licensing is just one step
closer to total government control, the last thing intended by the 2nd
amendment.

You see the dependent clause as being the primary part of the statement.
The rest of us see "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be
infringed" as the main part of the amendment. All the dependent clause
does is list a reason.... it is not necessarily the ONLY reason.

OK I think I can see your first point.

On what basis do you assert the need for a well regulated militia is not
intended to be the ONLY reason they believed the right to bear arms should
not be infringed though?

If it is the one and only justification intended, the right to carry for
self defense starts to look a bit shakey maybe?

And even if Militia does happen to mean anyone, "well regulated" means
tight
control to me.

Tough to summon a militia in an emergency if everyone is armed with
sticks. How well regulated would that mob be?

Well regulated obviously doesn't mean unarmed.

It could easily be construed to mean licensing of owners and secure
storage of weapons though.

Besides, the Bill of Rights refers to the individual in all cases. But
don't take my word for it... wait for a bit and hear it from the Supreme
Court.

It's 'exciting' that the Supreme Court are hearing this right now. I can't
wait. It will be more interesting if the DC laws are upheld I think. If
they are, more arguments about the usefulness of the laws, instead of the
legality of them, might even break out.
