I have seen this effect over and over. It's a human trait where we
all imagine that everyone else is "just like us". In general your
average working American really can't imagine true evil. They are
totally taken off guard when somebody breaks into their house and when
the police come and the guy is caught red handed, the perp claims that
the home owner assaulted HIM and the gun belongs to the victim.
Average Americans just can't seem to get their heads around the fact
that criminals are NOT like you and me. They lie, they cheat, they
steal, they ignore the law, they couldn't care less who they hurt and
have zero remorse for any acts. And unfortunately those in politics
use this ignorance to further their own ends.
