OTOH, I think I can get a good K31 for around $200, while
the Garand, if GunsAmerica is any indication, cost too much.

So what about rechambering the K31 to .308? Is it
commonly done, maybe sporterized K31s rechambered & ready to go?

I believe you'd have to SHORTEN the chamber, as opposed
to reaming it out. Too much trouble.

Oh well.

Garands are CHEAP. $600 will get you a service grade from
the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

If I showed up at an NRA target match I'd probably be the
target. Neat rifles though, I'd like to shoot one someday.

Basically, you have to (a) be a U.S. Citizen, (b) provide
proof of age, (c) be a member of an affiliated organization,
(http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearch.cgi.) and (d)
"provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related
activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe
handling of firearms and range procedures," such as

* Current or past military service.
* Current or past law enforcement service
* Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun
competition
(provide copy of results bulletin).
* Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included
live fire
training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion
or a statement from the instructor).
* Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
* Concealed Carry License.
* Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included
live fire
training.
* FFL or C&R license.
* Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included
live fire
training.
* Certification from range or club official or law
enforcement
officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in
completing and certifying your range firing can be
downloaded from the CMP web site at
http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf
* No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60.

I can wait a decade.

proof of club
membership and citizenship required for all ages.

No need to become a [tempting] target. Every qualified
citizen should be part of the Civilian Marksmanship
Program. Even you.

Maybe I'll join a Progressive rifle club.

What we need is a militia like the Swiss with compulsory
service for all able-bodied men & women ages 20 to 30. No
exemptions for rich kids. Then if a volunteer US Armed Forces
needed more troops they could draft from the militia and the
recruits would be ready for training; and if they weren't
ready they'd go to jail and work out.

I think what George Mason and John Adams said about the
militia makes sense, unless every able-bodied person
participates it places a burden on those who volunteer, and a
likelihood they'll be misused by unsympathetic chickenhawk
rich politicians and big business goons.

And we should probably do away with dual enlistment. The
National Guard shouldn't be used as full-time military for
more than a few months, it's just wrong for the citizen
soldiers who joined the Guard expecting they'd be mainly a
state militia and only a federal reserve force in dire
emergencies. Iraq was not an emergency that affected our
national security. This should never happen again.

You again win this week's prize for number of wrong, incorrect, unfounded
or just plain stupid statments in comparison to total number of words.

Which statements are you referring to?

Anything that comes from Weasel. Even if you think he's being positive it's
just a setup so he can you poopy pants in the next posting.

He's sort of like dog *** on your shoe. Hard to scrape off but you really
want him gone.

Do not engage him, he is one the more childish and fact challenged of the
posters. Not to mention his jihad like support for a deliberately inaccurate
understanding of the 2nd Amendment and US history.
