Westminster -- A Lakewood man, who is just three classes short of graduation,
is not going back to Front Range Community College because of its campus rules
on guns.
"I've carried a gun every day for six years. I have a permit. Everything is
legal. They still will not allow me to carry on their campus because it
violates their student code of conduct," said Aaron Brown, a former student.
Brown was suspended for six months after he was found carrying his gun on the
college campus. He has no plans to come back and finish his associate's degree
in science once his suspension is up.
"I'm not allowed to protect myself while I'm there. I can protect myself
anywhere in the state but not at their school," said Brown.
Brown said the Virginia Tech shootings have really made him question his
safety on any school campuses. While Colorado lawmakers said they understand
where Brown is coming from, they have different approaches to what should be
done.
"I agree with Aaron Brown. I think he should have that right. I've actually
tried to change the law to give him that right," said Republican Colorado Sen.
Greg Brophy.
"I think it's understandable that a lot of people are frightened and
considering their options. I don't criticize him for that. But I'm going to
stick with policy that schools should be able to decide what's best for them
in order to have the most security for the students," said Colorado Majority
Senate Leader Ken Gordon.
Both parties do agree that the recent shootings will have schools across the
country reexamining their security policies.
