A general rule is that a fundamental right, like the right to keep
and bear arms, speech, etc. can only be limited for a "Compelling
Government interest". Even then, only "to the most limited extent
necessary" to accomplish that interest.
Under this, it might be reasonable to limit firearms ownership (or
at least carry) for someone convicted of a crime involving firearms.
But it is questionable if the offense involves (e.g.) drugs or some
white collar offense such as Martha Stewart's.
