Gun Dealer Beaten During Armed Carjacking; Teens Sought

UPDATED: 12:57 pm EST November 27, 2006

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando police said they arrested one of three teens wanted in connection with an armed carjacking at the Central Florida
Gun Show.

Gary McAdams has wounds after being accosted, pistol-whipped and
carjacked, WESH 2 News reported.

"They beat me over the head with a revolver and said, 'Shut up or
we'll shoot your a--. Don't say a word,'" McAdams said.

Orlando police arrested Jerry Griffen, 18, and accused him of armed carjacking. They said he is one of four people involved in an armed carjacking Sunday night at the Central Florida Fairgrounds after a gun
show.

McAdams, 59, who is a gun dealer, said he was strongarmed as he was
heading out of the bathroom to his pickup truck and trailer. Even
though he knows about firearms, he said he knew he was in no position
to take one way.

"When I saw that the gun was loaded, I figured if he did pull the
trigger I'm a dead man," McAdams said. "At close range, at the head or
any part of the body, that caliber, that large frame auto(matic) .357
and .44, I'm a dead man."

After the attackers left, he called 911 on his cell phone.

Police found McAdams' stolen truck and trailer at Mercy Drive and
Colony Way. A burgundy car was recovered at the nearby Palms
apartment. Police said it was registered to Griffen.

"Griffen had fled his car when he saw the police coming and went to a nearby lake, and a K-9 tracked to him and he gave himself up," said Detective Steven Stanaland.

Investigators said one weapon was found in Griffen's car. Police said
it belongs to the gun dealer.

Another gun was also found that police believe was dropped as the
robbers ran off.

Police said one of the attackers' own guns discharged as they were unloading the dealer’s trailer.

McAdams suffered only minor injuries, for which he said he is
thankful.

"The best thing I could do at that time is give up the keys at that point," McAdams said. "You know, because I can always replace a truck
or something like that. I can't replace my life the same way."

Griffen also faces grand theft and drug charges.

Anyone with any information is urged to call CrimeLine at
800-423-TIPS.

and outside the hijackers accosted him, took away his pistol and beat him with it
