There are many reason including the simple reason
of insisting that ANYONE wishing to immigrate to
this country is not a law-breaker by their first act
(literally) of entering the country.

We must do this for humanitarian reasons -- illegal
aliens offer too much opportunity to smugglers and
to illegal employers to abuse them as virtual slave
labor.

We must do this in FAIRNESS to those immigrants
who follow the rules, our laws, which in many cases
has required them to wait in line for years.

I don't know about you, but I despise those who think
they can jump to the front of a line where others are
waiting patiently.

We must do this for security too. Terrorism is only
one part of that security -- another is the opportunity
to screen and reject those with criminal backgrounds
of the mundane sort OR who might be operating as
terrorists too.
