m.. .
Bottom line is just how many privately owned cannon were
ever used by a militia? How many frigates or warships
existed in private hands? One, two, a few? How many militia
members were expected to show up with them? If they had
them, I assume that they would be welcomed.....they were
expected to show up with proper rifles, shotguns or
sidearms.
Read a little more history. Particularly on the period
between the French and Indian War and the Spanish American
War. Revolutionary and War of 1812 Privateers were
significant in number and caused enough loss to British
shipping to force them to the bargaining table. Remember the
story of Washington's retreat from Brooklyn, how the
Marblehead regiment rowed the Army out of harms way, well
that regiment disappeared the next year because so many of
those seamen shipped on privateers. The Civil War saw many
"volunteer" regiments raised by private individuals who
recieved State commissions once the unit was manned. That
was similarly how Theodore Roosevelt raised the "Rough
Riders" although the Army commisioned him Lt. Col. and
placed Col. Leonard Wood in command with Roosevelt as his
deputy commander.
I didn't say that they didn't exist. I stated that common
militiamen were not expected to show up with them. The common
arms that the militia *was* expected to show up with were
rifles, shotguns and/or sidearms. The others were a bonus.
The main point is that no one was barred from owning cannon,
rather it was a matter of money.
A claim I have not made. I said that when reporting militia duty,
folks were expected to show up bearing arms in common use at the
time. That would be rifles, shotguns and/or sidearms. I said
that they were not expected to show up with cannon or frigates.
I know, but there are lurkers like LW and SK. ;) Hi, Steve.....
You msspelt loons.
Damn, I did, didn't I. Oh, well........

People discuss self defense as if you have as much time to do it in as
they have to discuss it. In reality, you have a flash to identify the
threat and react. Whether or not you actually pull the trigger is
something that you have a microsecond to decide and a lifetime
to live with.
