I always used a .22 on hogs, but not on steers. I'd go to my .45.

I used invite the piggie to follow me from the pasture...they did that,
IF you had nice juicy apple. When he was in the killing area, near my
hoisting tackle and singletree, I roll the apple to him, and as he
stood happily munching on it, pow. Now for a pig that's sort of like
when we say we'd like to die ...harumph..... wink wink nudge
nudge....in arms of a women.

Or by an irate husband as we tried to make our escape.

To expand on your question. There have different kill devices for
slaughterhouse use. I believe I recall a "bolt gun" that shot a short
rod into the forehead of the steer driven by a .38 blank. It was based
probably on the masonry gun that drives fasteners the same way.

The problem with a gun that fires a loose projective is if there is a
miss or pass through someone could get hurt beside the steer. The bolt
gun overcame that, as the bolt can only travel a few inches before it's
stopped by an enternal crossbar.

And the final answer, so far, has been the electric probes.

We used to, shhhh...don't tell anyone at PETA, simple suspect hogs live
and cut their throats and let them bleed out. It makes for very white
meat, more desirable on the market.

I never did that with my own stock though. Just saw it done at the
butchers. I transported livestock as a business for awhile, mostly to
the "stockyards," which means of course the pens around the
slaughterhouse.

If we surrender can we get a peace settlement that includes a 5 person
sauna for each of us with three or four Finnish ladies to do the
birchings?

hehehehe...
