Stray knife hits NY woman in 5th floor apartment?

"A Queens mother of two peering out her living room window was killed
late Wednesday by a single stray bullet that police said was fired by
an Army private during a boozy celebration of his homecoming with
friends."

Of course it was a bullet, not a knife, and that's no small matter. The
odds of a thrown knife reaching a 5th floor apartment and causing a
fatal wound are nil, but bullets are grimly efficient. Guns are simply
more dangerous than other weapons, whether used intentionally or
accidentally. There is nothing unclear about that concept so stop
muddling it with exceptional cases.

The premise that trained people with guns will always use them
cautiously is another huge lie (see above). Anything to reduce the
chances of misuse is reasonable considering these deadly incidents. You
may say he was just an idiot but the gun magnified his idiocy a hundred
fold, and that's the big problem with high velocity projectiles. Fears
of slippery-slope regulation can't justify so many "accidental"
deaths.

It's quite reasonable that tight controls be mandated with so many
careless "law abiding" people in the general population. Some of them
are reading this newsgroup, panting over a collection they've just
polished, waiting for that day of glory when they can actually shoot
someone and call it self-defense. That's the big draw in a nutshell,
don't deny it. The rush would be tremendous, though the aftermath
wouldn't be what you expect. This is a litigious society, not the Old
West. Smart people control their hero fantasies - or move to lawless
nations. I doubt many of you would live in Somalia even if you had a
nice house their. Real violence is much messier than the typical
firearm fantasy showdown.

Let it be known that I'm not a gun hater, just a death & carnage
hater. I like the mechanisms but not the inevitable outcomes. Nobody is
going to take ALL your blessed guns, so get over yourselves, stop
bitching and examine the horror they cause each day. Hatred of
government makes you insurgents, not militiamen. Gun ownership is a
privilege, not a right.
