Probably not. I live in New Zealand, in a small satellite city, quite some
distance above sea level.

We do get (regular but fairly small) earthquakes here, and there was some
flooding a couple of years ago - but I took that as an opportunity to go
kayaking in the street...

And no, I am not being flippant about the tragedy in N.O.!!..

# So far,and this may be premature on my behalf,I have come to the

I am *amazed* it has taken so long to mobilise troops, food, water,
transport, accomodation, etc, etc for the people left there. I guess the big
take home message is plan ahead for your own defence - and that includes
food, water, ammo, whatever.

I am also a little surprised that we haven't or heard any stories of people
in non-affected areas taking in refugees - filling up sports stadia just
seems a recipe for disaster - cholera, hepatitis, West Nile Virus... you
name it.

Personally, we have water stored all over the house (those little
earthquakes just *might* turn out to be a big earthquake one day), we all
know first aid (I am trained as a first aider, my wife is a nurse, the kids
have some training), there is canned food available in the house, the cars
are always full of fuel (especially the 4x4), the rifles are clean and there
is ammo for them.

We have candles, sleeping bags, matches, more water, etc, etc.

Oh yes, and we planned not to live in a flood zone. We are a LONG way above
the creek - we had to carry the kayak quite a way to use it when we had the
flood here...

If the worst comes to the worst, we will probably stay right where we are
until society gets back to its feet.

We could hold out for ages if we had to. The diet will get boring, but we
can hold out..

Agree.
