Hitler declared war on the US on December 11. The Roosevelt
administration feared that congress would not declare war on Germany,
preferring to deal with the Japanese only. Hitler's declaration
solved the problem. Eventually, more than 80% of US military
resources went to the European campaign.
The best explaination I have heard is that Hitler felt that a
Pacific war would drain away US Naval resources from the Battle of the
Atlantic, where we were already active belligerents. Similarly, US
troops couldn't be brought to bear for several years, by which time
he expected the war would be over. He may have hoped for a tit for
tat, with the Japanese joining his war agaisnt the Russians
