A general point: American healthcare matters to the rest of the world
because so much of the cost of healthcare elsewhere is driven by US
corruption of the market. Medical care - at least basic medical care -
ought to be an order of magnitude cheaper than it is, but is kept
artificially high by the costs of US medical providers and
manufacturers. If we in Australia want to use medical technology made in
the US, we pay US prices. It's basically a world health issue.
A general point: American [industry x] matters to the rest of the
world
because so much of the cost of [industry x] elsewhere is driven by US
corruption of the market.
By the way, everything you do that is even vaguely economic in nature
is influenced by US economics through the financial sector alone.
(N.B., for instance: even if you pay for something with cash its price
is influence by the interest rate you would pay were you to buy the
thing on credit. Upshot: you're pinned through both palms, Boyo; one
stigmata labeled N.Y., the other, Beijing. Drink neo-colonial bile,
ye peripheral!)
Well, the punchline here, Ol' Friend, is that, come late January, the
new Chairman of the Congressional subcommittee overseeing the Federal
Reserve System will be a long-term Texas Congressman named Ron Paul.
And this is not a diversion from the original topic, which was more-or-
less about the connection between American politics and people feeling
sick in other countries.
There may be those out there who do not know that Representative
Paul is a Libertarian. Senator Paul, his son, is also a Libertarian
but one who seems to be willing to bend a bit on legislation
helpful to his state.
The Pauls are not Libertarians - they are members of the Republican Party, not the Libertarian party. Furthermore, I am reluctant to grant the label of libertarian to them; libertarians ought to be pro-liberty, not anti-tax.

If it didn't matter so much, it could be fun to watch.
