Their gene pool is sufficiently diverse and flexible that they won't have to worry about becoming extinct through overspecialization.

Where I live, we don't have stray dogs, but we do have plenty of feral cats. And guess what, they don't look like specialized breeds at all. That ship has sailed. These feral cats, descended from generations of feral cats, are quite big, aggressive, and stealthy--almost like the wildcats they descended from thousands of years ago.
