How do you know REM sleep is not a glimpse into an alternate reality?
REMS could be a manifestation of what is to come after death.
So heaven is a place were you go to school in your underwear, or fall
off of things or otherwise do mental housekeeping?
No, sleep is for resting, REM sleep is the brains way of doing what
we'd call "garbage collection" in computer science.
I suspect it's also a soak test. Dreams throw the consciousness into random novel situations to practise reactions in a safe virtual environment.
The brain has a lot of stuff to deal with when it is "conscious" but
when you are in REM sleep it gets to go back over a lot of things and
tidy up.
(do I need to put HTML metaphor tags around that?)
To Adman "metaphor" is a term used to distance himself from a literal biblical interpretation, when he disagrees with it.
Different creationists think different parts are metaphorical of course. I noticed recently that Adman said that animals used to talk because the bible said the snake talked, but another creationist declared that the talking snake was a metaphor! Nice to be able to change then underlying facts like that, suits any argument.
