Some time back there was a professor in TX who advertised
a policy regarding letters or recommendation. He said he
would ask a student 'How do you think the human species
originated?' The student was required to affirm a scientific
explanation. There was a great deal of back and forth on
the issue of a student who could correctly relate all
of the scientific position but held a different belief
about humans. It seems that many feel that you have to
do more than understand the scientific argument, you
also have to believe it. The professors name was Dini,
it was around 2002 and he taught somewhere in Texas.

Some of the heat may have arisen from rather poor choices
in wording by Dini.
Here's an ancient summary.http://www.arn.org/docs2/news/techprofessor020203.htm

It was discussed in some heated detail on talk.origins.

and why shouldnt he have this requirement? creationists deliberately
go through the motions just to get a degree that they can point to and
claim to have scientific authority. science is about honesty. if you
are admitting that you are only learning science so you can later lie
about it to turn people into creationists, then you dont deserve a
degree.

One never has to engage snex very much before the accusations of
lying show up. This one is particularly interesting as you are
asserting that some people is planning on lying about something,
what remains unclear. Nevertheless, they are theists and so
nepharious purposes are to be assumed. Whatever the imagined
intended lie, they are to be denied a degree if they
don't pass a purity test on their beliefs. This comment of yours
is a precious keeper.

ah no moron, they are not merely "theists," they are *creationists.*

Oh no! CREATIONISTS. Hide the women and children.

Near as I can tell, Kurt Wise earned his PhD fairly. If he
goes around spouting creationist nonsense with a Harvard PhD
tag after his name this is a good thing because it emphasizes
what useless thing it is to claim to be right because you
have a PhD (especially a Harvard one). Argument from
authority has always been bogus and fear of it is no reason
to deny someone a degree they have earned.

As to why one should not do a belief test (as opposed to a
knowledge test)? Well science has been full of theories with various
levels of support. We don't have rules that say you have to
believe in a theory. We do tend to require that you understand
the theories that have been established. The advantage of this
standard are easily recognized by anyone of even modest
intelligence, be they truly Scottish or not. If you don't
see it, you'll simply have to believe me.

and you can keep on giving degrees to people who will do nothing but
show them off to rubes right before lying to them about science all
you like. im sure that will convince people that religion and science
are compatible.

feel free to join the rest of us in the real world whenever you are
ready.

Punky, you've no idea. I'll pretty well guarantee I'm worked with
more eminent scientists, had more PhDs and MDs working for me,
run bigger budgets and received bigger grants than you could ever
dream of. A fair number of these folks have been religious, mostly
not. The dysfunctional ones are usually manic depressives to some
degree. They are actually highly productive when the rest of their
life is working out, otherwise you do damage control. Religious
beliefs have never been an issue.

funny how right after you point out that credentials mean nothing, you
go on to spout your silly credentials. guess what, nobody cares who
worked for you or what pieces of paper you have on your walls. your
arguments are still silly.
