Kermit, If you want to do this, we have to get it started. Next
weekends good for me, the 14th or 15th. I'm heading on out of here, so
e-mail me.
I'm pretty sure I said I was willing; I never said I wanted it. Just
in case you're on the up and up, I apologize, but I don't think you
understand the concept of "not a sport". In any event, I am troubled
by the ethical implications. Whether I win or lose, I would be *trying
to hurt you. I don't think what I would learn from this (assuming I
survive) would justify it. So no go; ain't gonna happen.

You're still welcome to come by and talk shop or watch a class.

I should have looked at this again before hitting "send". I could have
abbreviated ti considerably. This makes most civilized people
uncomfortable. Apologies to all.
Kermit
No apology necessary here, but I must not be civilized. It is likely
that I will never have to fight, but if I do, one of us is at least
going to the emergency room. Given my age, it is likely to be me,
however.
There is the practical problem of finding partners willing to let me
practice the technique. Biting, sure, you just don't chomp hard.
Elbows to the throat, you simply pull the strike. I guess I could
simulate it with vocalization, and then practice for real against the
wooden dummy, but the nice old lady next door already looks at me
askance when I work out.
You'd be surprised to see how people have the same reaction to being a
sparring partner in bang-jutsu or gun-do. Oh, you probably wouldn't be
surprised.

Ha! I thought I was responding to el cid's link to an uncommon, but
potentially effective technique.

Some cops and federal agencies are doing well in gun fu training using
paintball gear. The shooters learn to partially get over their
civilized distaste for mayhem by shooting their friends (at least,
their slow ones) with paintballs - they hurt, and the action is
similar, so they become somewhat deconditioned to, um, the conditions.
Apparently for cops and warriors who aren't sociopaths, the techniques
of firing, moving, and taking cover can be less important than
overcoming the (instinctive?) reluctance to hurt other people.

I hear there is even non-lethal ammo one can get for using with the
issued firearms. I assume there are strict safety precautions in
effect for that kind of practice.

Kermit

in Arlington Texas there was the occasion that someone mis-loaded a revolver for police training and killed one person with a grievance during training. NO RESPONSIBILITY was ever found.
