Who gets to decide who is and who is not knowledgeable?

The level of someone's knowledge is not based on a third party's
decision.

Hmmm. Inez's answer is definitely correct. And yet (M)adman's
rhetorical question must mean something. Let me try to rephrase it.
"Who gets to decide which arguments from authority are acceptable
and which are not?" (That probably attaches more validity to (M)adman's
position here than he deserves, but what the heck? He says he is
leaving so it can't hurt to be nice to him.)

So what is the answer to my version of (M)adman's question? I'm
afraid the only defensible answer is "You decide for yourself which
authority to accept - no one can decide for you."

Kind of depressing, actually. Madman can continue to remain ignorant
of biology because he mistrusts all of the usual authorities on the subject.

But there is an upside. I am allowed to remain ignorant of "Ancient
Texts".
