It's best for the human social structure (and the survival of the
human species is based almost entirely on its social structure) that
the male NOT know when the female is in estrus. That way he has to
stick around all the time.
Reformulation:
The period of evolutionary history during which we were 'the aquatic ape'
(see Hardy, Morgan et al...) resulted in the loss of the ability to display
and sense oestrus (i.e. nothing is going to get across when the female's
hind quarters are below water and the male's eyes and nose are usually above
it). So the male's need to 'stick around all the time' exerts its inevitable
pressure and... before too long... you get human social structure... and...
human culture...
