You shouldn't have been. Liberation Theology has a long long history,
particularly in South America. Oscar Romero was probably its most
famous proponent.

The most militant Marxist I ever met was a Catholic Priest in Bocana
de Paiwas, Nicaragua. He would say Mass with his Kalashnikov leaning
against the altar. (This was in February 1988, during the Contra
War).
