Is there any newreader that allows one to not only block all posts by a
given poster but also all posts to all threads started by that poster?
David
Several can almost do that. Look for something that will sort by references,
and then set it to kill anything which uses a reference to the poster you
don't want to read. Forte Agent should be able to do that on Windows.
Hogwasher and MT-NW can do that on Macs.
Forte Agent definitely has an "ignore thread" option. I don't know
how or if it works, though. You can kill by author, subject, or
return address.
The only thing that Forte Agent doesn't doe, which I would like, is to
automatically scroll down to new text, skipping quoted pieces. Other
than that, I really like it.
(Exceptionally perceptive or snoopy people may notice that I am
posting from Google, not Forte Agent. That is because DIG has
mysteriously put my news server, motzarella, on his kill list. So I
use Forte to read 15 different news groups but respond to only 14
them.)
might try setting up Pan or something as a newsreader that's Linux
friendly, but then I have to search for a good server.
Drats...google's too easy.
I had used Mozillas's Thunderbird in the past. You can set it up to
filter messages. When I did that for the chinese sneaker spam it
started tweaking on me. Then my server got slow as a retired tourist
in the passing lane on I-95. Not sure if...given my limited use of
usenet...hassling with a reader/server combo is worth it again.
Hmmmm...
*-if anyone has a wee little netbook they might give Ubuntu 9.04
netbook remix a test drive...burn Ubuntu 8.10 (Hardy Heron) to disc on
a CD capable PC, run a live sessiion, download a 9.04 netbook remix
img file to resident memory and install the USB imagewriter. Use the
latter to burn the former to your USB stick (you might need to
preformat USB stick as ext3 in gparted I dunno). Then take the USB to
your netbook. On start-up go into BIOS and change boot order to
prioritize the USB that's holding your image (either FDD or HDD). Upon
booting you can try the new Ubuntu w/o installing and see if it
recognizes your hardware. This one picked up my wireless card. The GUI
interface is specially crafted for mini-screens and so far everything
works great, much better than Gnome (but not KDE!!!) Fedora 10 on the
mini platform, although that's doable, but preferably with an external
CD drive hooked via USB to load the ISO. Only install if you hate
Windows enough to watch the formatting wipe it into oblivion. You
could try dual boot but that can go downhill fast.
