It _may or may not_ have a distant basis in fact... but I love the idea
(and it fills me with a poignant melancholy that we missed them by
such a short span of time in evolutionary terms) that the "strangers
at the bottom of the garden" or "the fairy folk" and gnomes, elves
and all the other humanoid "others" that crop up over and over again
in mythology and folklore could have their roots in the time we
shared the planet with another human species.
This is exactly correct.
And just like "the fairy folk" and gnomes, elves, and all the other humanoid
"others" that crop up over and over again in mythology and folklore are
based in truth.
Evidence?
Likewise, so are other mythology and folklore are /based/ in truth. Such as
the flood,
No evidence.
the garden of eden,
No evidence.
God
No evidence.
and all the other folklore.
Though some foklore may have a historical basis, that does not mean
they all do. Even then, folklore as history is about as dependable
as "Uncle Wally's Fishing Trip" where Uncle Wally claims to have
hooked a five foot long bass that got away. No evidence, but the
story lives on.
Why? Because it's entertainment.
