Re: Holographic Universe?

While most of the discussions here center on some version of some
theory of biological evolution, there's much more interesting science
being done. My favorite relates to cosmology and it's much less prone
to partisan screaming. The latest cool thing I ran across is here:

or, to quote a snippet:

If space-time is a grainy hologram, then you can think of the universe
as a sphere whose outer surface is papered in Planck length-sized
squares, each containing one bit of information. The holographic
principle says that the amount of information papering the outside
must match the number of bits contained inside the volume of the
universe.

Since the volume of the spherical universe is much bigger than its
outer surface, how could this be true? Hogan realised that in order to
have the same number of bits inside the universe as on the boundary,
the world inside must be made up of grains bigger than the Planck
length. "Or, to put it another way, a holographic universe is blurry,"
says Craig Hogan, a physicist at the Fermilab particle physics lab in
Batavia, Illinois.

Now this is far more interesting than the tedious discussions about
biological evolution. While cosmology can be controversial in the
newsgroup (Frank J. Tipler's the "Omega Point" was not well received
nor is anything from Fritjof Capra, though they are both scientists
with advanced degrees). While cosmology and the underlying physics are
not often invoked in discussions in this newsgroup, there's lots of
concepts that could affect the variety of atheism common here. It
turns out that the way people in this group understand nature and
science is really pretty dated. The simplistic reductionism preferred
in this group may apply to lawn mowers and and lego blocks but not
much else.

too late! already posted this the other day....good article though
