IOW, *only* Jews who had ceased being Jews deserved life.  The Spanish
Catholics of the Inquisition felt the very same way.

A friend of min in Albuquerque tells me of outwardly Catholic Spanish
people who have private, Jewish traditions. The story goes that because
of the Inquisition, Spanish Jews publicly converted to save their skins
but secretly went on being Jewish to save their souls. Some of them fled
to the Americas where the Inquisition wasn't so powerful. And so there
are all these people who do what their ancestors did: Catholic church on
Sunday, Jewish celebrations at home.
