And earlier that year, the Anchorage Daily News reported that Palin
said the following about creationism at a debate:
"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information....Healthy
debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a
proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the
daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and
blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the
subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation
for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both
sides."

would use "creationist" less often.
In 1997 (before I learned of ID and how all anti-evolution strategies
are based on misrepresentation) I too said "teach both". And I had
accepted evolution for 30 years by then. More recently McCain said
that he accepts evolution but nevertheless continues to be fooled by
the "teach both" nonsense.
Of course whether they "are" creationists or just pander to them is
still a problem for science education.
It doesn't matter if he is or is not a creationist. Teaching
both is a wonderful political compromise. Schools in New York
and Orange County can each do their thing.
That part doesn't bother me.
What bothers me is that we are not so slowly slipping down
the greased pole of scientific development. Sure, we have
lots of top people left, but who will replace them?
And funding for the NIH (and other institutes) is rapidly
drying up.
Kids smart enought to go into the battle zone known as
biology and more than smart enough to go to work on Wall
Street, and they do.

Along with evolution, shouldn't we also accept the lessons of history
about nation-states and empires and cultures, social, technological,
and economic? Things change, and so there are new winners and losers.
Globalization may well mean that science and technology will be
commodified just like everything else; that tends to be good for the
authoritarian types locally. If you can be a fundamentalist in The
Panhandle a and still get excellent medical care and 33 cable
channels, no need to kowtow to those smarty nerd types that did better
than you in school.
