Which direction is "along the axis of the sun's trajectory?" You
maximize sun warming by being perpendicular to the direction of the
sun and, if you point in the North-South direction you are distinctly
not perpendicular around noontime. This would be the proper
orientation to get early morning and late afternoon warmth but shield
yourself from the sun during midday.
