Why should a Roman chariot found in part of the Roman Empire be at
all
a surprise? And why should it be of any interest?

Archaeologists had found few artifacts of the Thracian civilization
till
now. Presumably after they got absorbed into the Roman Empire, they
started using Roman designs for their machines.

I was a bit excessive in my questioning. Obviously a well preserved
anything from almost two millennia ago is of great archeological
interest. In the United States, something dating all the way back to
1910 is considered of Great Historical Interest!

It is true that the blurb indicates that little of pre-Roman Thracian
civilization has been found. This find doesn't change that fact:
Thrace became part of the Roman Empire in 44AD and this find dates to
the second century AD, some hundred years later.

And why is it of interest in talk.origins?

But on the face of this Ishtar Gate are animals
depicted in gold. Many of them are known animals, but some
seem to be animals that are extinct.

Extinct? Or merely imaginary?

Brenda, some do wonder if the ones we do not recognize
are mythical, yes. That may be. But it doesn't seem likely
in a way, that they would show a representation of real
animals, with the great detail they have shown, and then
mix them in with mythical ones. Can you imagine that if
a giraffe went extinct, what someone hundreds of years
later would think about it?

So, using this argument, and applying it to, say ancient Egyptian
art, we must be prepared to accept the reality of humanoid forms with
the heads of jackals, falcons and crocodiles.
