I think the problem was me.  I have two computers, a laptop and a
desktop.  My desktop computer fell on its sword, and my new computer
has Windows Vista, which apparently was specially designed by
Microsoft to torment me.

Upgrade to XP Pro. You will never regret the move.

I actually tried that, but it didn't work and according to the folks
at the computer store my hard drive in incompatible with XP.
