What if gas cost $10 a gallon?

In the Netherlands it costs 6.48 $/gallon.
In Italy it's "just" 5.96 $/gallon.

I don't see such catastrophe at 10 $/gallon, people will just use
smaller cars.
When it reaches 100 $/gallon there will be big problems.

There will be grief well before it hits $10. Eight small airlines have
folded in the last seven weeks,

I'm not an expert but I presume that aircraft fuel consumption can't
be compressed significatively with current technology, thus air
transport will be probably among the sectors that suffer the most.

trucking industry is feeling similar
pain.

Isn't rail transportation more fuel efficient?

Fifty oil producing nations are in decline. Canterell is in decline,
Burgan is in decline. Can't tell about Ghawar, they recently upped
production in response to Bush's request, but not much. When their
decline starts we have a real problem. The last time the amount of oil
we discovered in year matched the amount of oil we used was sometime
around 1980 or 1981.

The end of the summer driving season will probably bring some minor
relief, but for the long term its looks like the fun is coming to
an end. The equivalent of soil depletion for a pastoral society with
a food based energy system.
