The researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre found that
while in the late 1960s, only 6 percent of sticklebacks were
completely plated, today 49 percent are fully plated and 35 percent
are partially plated, with about half of their bodies shielded in bony
armor.
"We propose that the most likely cause of this reverse evolution in
the sticklebacks is from the higher levels of trout predation after
the sudden increase in water transparency," said senior author
Catherine "Katie" Peichel.
Thats not 'reverse evolution'. The ones who can't survive without
armor are being less successful than those who have armor. Its just
evolution.
No doubt, but presumably it is a reversal of changes that started to
take place when the white man came and proceeded to pour all that
sewage into the lake. The same as them moths, as someone already
pointed out.
And those fish living in dark caves that un-grew their eyes - that's
freaky. But mostly not /our/ fault /that/ time.
Hey, anyone want to talk about other evolutions that we'd like to see
reversed?
Douglas Adams considers a response to general human unhappiness in the
modern world: "Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all
made a big mistake coming down from the trees in the first place, and
some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no-one
should ever have left the oceans."
Should we have stayed as happy aquatic apes? But if we were in fact
happy, then we /would/ have stayed, I think. So it's a conundrum.
